Imagine brushing teeth with a 4-year-old at bed time when you and your child are tired and it's not easy for either of you. Can an invention add moments of grace to our tiresome daily routines? Can a tool pause us amidst the hectic rituals of work and child rearing? The answer is yes. We apply scientific principles to solve daily problems and reduce the friction and even add enjoyment to daily tasks. The inspiration for Invent Boston's simple gadgets arose out of our family's day to day life in an urban home. Do you have trouble getting your child to brush their teeth each night, go to bed on time, or wake up early enough in the morning? Could these daily habits be more fun? How can a strategically placed tool help? Sign up to receive periodic updates on our work.
Why did we start with toothbrushing?
When our daughter went to one of her first dentist appointments the dentist told us she had 9 cavities. Yikes! Toothbrushing for children is a gateway healthy habit.
At the end of a day, children and parents feel their most tired. And as children assert their independence, parents want things done and quickly but children want to brush their own teeth. Those 2 minutes is a longer period than most of us realize! We need our children to become independent and reliable tooth brushers. This Two Minute Turtle toothbrushing timer helped our children to focus so they more quickly could brush without reminders and and stay on task. With our toothbrushing timer, our children grew more independent and got used to watching the lights and brushing thoroughly on their own.
After 20 years sourcing fair trade, organic, coffee, tea and chocolate from small farmer cooperatives from around the world, we are taking what we learned from raising a family, commuting, working and addressing the gaps we find at home right here in America. This is a different kind of poverty-- of time and attention raising children today. The daily work–feeding, clothing, cleaning, gardening–require focus, energy, time and someone creative managing all that. Invent Boston is for people who seek even more time, attention and whimsy in the steadiness of home life. Invent Boston helps to use our experiences of squeezed time, rushed commutes, stretched attentions to listen to our hearts and the laws of nature and take what’s been at our door and in our homes and share it with you. All we need is you! Stay tuned!
We are making prototypes in our house, basement and in our garden. We are testing them in our home and with you, people who might like to try these tools and toys, people who want the parenting day to go a little more smoothly. How to get children to brush teeth for the full 2 minutes at the end of the day when child and parent are tired? Who knows what 2 minutes looks like anyway? Let's see! How to use a sundial that tells time exactly where I am? We have fun with science to help solve the daily problems around our home and enjoy every day. Do you have a problem you’d like to solve? Send us your thoughts. We’d love to hear from you.
